Those who follow a brand or company on social media are much more likely to purchase or shop at its stores.

Though this study was conducted in America, and with the data being 10 months old (ancient in network years) it still shows us how powerful social media is in society these days.

TL;DR:
25% of users followed a brand on facebook to receive discounts, while only 2% followed brands because they worked for them.

Twitter users were the most inclined to buy from their followed brand, with 67% of them frequently shopping them. Twitterers again were also more likely to urge their friends to follow the brand.
